Tour Highlights
Christchurch & Akaroa — French Harbour & Rare Dolphins
Begin your South Island journey in Christchurch — a city of riverside precincts, beautiful winter gardens, and quiet, determined resilience. Travel across the scenic Banks Peninsula to the charming French-influenced harbour village of Akaroa for a scenic cruise in search of the rare Hector’s dolphin — one of the world’s smallest and rarest dolphin species, found only in New Zealand waters and in particular abundance in Akaroa’s sheltered harbour. A genuinely special wildlife encounter to begin the journey.
TranzAlpine Train — One of the World’s Great Rail Journeys
Board the iconic TranzAlpine Train — consistently rated among the world’s most spectacular rail journeys — and travel from the Canterbury Plains into the dramatic heart of the Southern Alps. Deep river gorges, ancient alpine forest, soaring snow-covered peaks, and the vast open sky of the alpine passes unfold outside the panoramic windows. A genuinely cinematic experience that sets the tone for the South Island scenery to come.
West Coast & Franz Josef Glacier Region
Journey into the wild West Coast — where ancient temperate rainforest meets rugged coastline and the scale of the landscape becomes genuinely overwhelming. Explore the Franz Josef Glacier region, shaped over millennia by the movement of ice and water through the Southern Alps. The contrast between lush rainforest and permanent glacier is unlike anywhere else in the world.
Wānaka & Queenstown — Alpine Lakes & Gold Rush Heritage
Cross the spectacular Haast Pass into Central Otago and the alpine beauty of Wānaka and Queenstown — two of New Zealand’s most beloved destinations. Crystal-clear lakes mirror snow-dusted peaks in the winter light, creating views of extraordinary natural beauty. Enjoy a relaxed winery lunch showcasing Central Otago’s world-renowned Pinot Noir, and explore historic Arrowtown — one of New Zealand’s best-preserved gold-mining towns, its autumn-gold trees and stone cottages particularly beautiful in winter.
Fiordland National Park & Milford Sound
The centrepiece of the journey — and for many travellers, the experience of a lifetime. Travel deep into the vast wilderness of Fiordland National Park — one of the largest national parks in the world — for a cruise on Milford Sound. Sheer granite cliffs rise 1,200 metres from the dark, still waters. Waterfalls cascade from impossible heights. Fur seals bask on rocky outcrops. And in winter, the fiord is at its most dramatic — low cloud wreathing the peaks, the light soft and silver and extraordinary.
In Te Anau, a peaceful lake cruise and visit to the remarkable Glowworm Caves reveals a surreal underground world of bioluminescent light — a genuinely magical experience.
Aoraki / Mount Cook & Lake Tekapo — Stars, Glaciers & Turquoise Waters
Continue into the vast open landscape of the Mackenzie Basin, where Aoraki / Mount Cook — New Zealand’s highest peak at 3,724 metres — dominates the horizon above a landscape of glaciers, braided rivers, and sweeping alpine valleys. Winter brings exceptional clarity and some of the finest stargazing conditions in the Southern Hemisphere — the Mackenzie Basin is a designated Dark Sky Reserve and on a clear winter night the Milky Way is overwhelming.
Continue to Lake Tekapo — its almost impossibly vivid turquoise waters fed by glacial flour, the small stone Church of the Good Shepherd on its shore one of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand. A beautiful and peaceful final chapter before returning to Christchurch.
