Solo Travel FAQs

Everything you need to know about travelling solo with Two’s a Crowd — from single supplements and room sharing to group sizes, age ranges, and how our tours actually work. Can’t find your answer here? Email us at team@twosacrowd.com.au and we’ll get back to you promptly.

What is a solo traveller?

At Two’s a Crowd, a solo traveller is anyone travelling alone — or anyone who wants their own room. Your relationship status is completely irrelevant. Our travellers include single people, people whose partners don’t share their travel interests, and friends who want to travel together but prefer their own space. If you want your own room and great company, you’re a solo traveller.

What is a single supplement — and does Two's a Crowd charge one?

A single supplement is an additional fee charged by hotels and tour operators when one person occupies a room alone. In the mainstream travel industry, single supplements can add up to 100% extra to the cost of a tour — effectively penalising solo travellers for travelling alone. At Two’s a Crowd we work hard to keep single supplements as low as possible, and in many cases eliminate them entirely. Our definition of “low” is always below 30% of the per-person rate.

What age range are your tours designed for?

Our tours are designed for adults aged 40 and over. Our typical traveller is between 50 and their late 60s, though we warmly welcome anyone over 40. If you’re unsure whether a specific tour is right for you, just get in touch — we’re happy to chat.

How big are your tour groups?

Our small group solo tours average 15 people and never exceed 20*. This is one of the most important differences between Two’s a Crowd and mainstream tour operators, who often travel with groups of 40 or more. Smaller groups mean more personal attention, better accommodation in the heart of cities, more authentic cultural access, and a genuinely different kind of travel experience.

*Ship and train charter groups are larger, but the entire vessel or train is exclusive to Two’s a Crowd solo travellers. .

Will I always have my own room?

Yes — always, on every night of every tour. We never ask our travellers to share rooms. You’ll have a private ensuite room in every hotel or ship. In more unique accommodation (a Bedouin camp, a heritage tent, a safari lodge) shared bathroom facilities are occasionally unavoidable but are the rare exception and always disclosed in advance.

What type of bed will I have?

Room allocation is at the discretion of individual hotels. While we always request double beds, we can’t guarantee them — some travellers receive doubles, others twin beds, and in Europe single beds are common. All rooms have private ensuites.

What is a Two's a Crowd Tour Host?

Our Tour Hosts are the secret ingredient. Every Two’s a Crowd departure is accompanied by one of our experienced, passionate Tour Hosts — someone who works alongside the local guides to ensure everything runs smoothly, handles any issues that arise, and genuinely adds to the experience. They’ll join you for meals, take you to local markets, share insider tips, and make sure no one ever feels left out. They’re travellers, not administrators — and past travellers consistently rate them as one of the highlights of the trip.

Are your tours more expensive than other group tours?

The single biggest driver of tour cost is group size. Many operators run tours with 40+ people, which keeps costs down but dramatically reduces the quality of the experience. With Two’s a Crowd, you’re travelling in a group of 10–15 solo travellers with personalised attention, city-centre hotels, and a dedicated Tour Host — and you’re paying a price that reflects that. We believe it’s exceptional value for what’s delivered, and our travellers consistently agree.

Are departures guaranteed?

Departures are guaranteed once a minimum number of confirmed bookings is reached (generally 8 travellers). If a tour doesn’t reach minimum numbers, you’ll be notified well in advance and we’ll work with you to find the best alternative. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for full details.

Do you try to match people romantically?

No! Our sole intention is to help solo travellers see the world affordably and enjoyably. Many travellers form lasting friendships — some of our most treasured feedback is about the bonds formed on tour. As for romance, that’s entirely out of our hands!

Are all meals included in the tour cost?

Meals vary by tour and are detailed on each tour page. We deliberately include free time for meals on most tours because many travellers love the freedom to explore local restaurants independently — or with a new friend from the group. Your Tour Host and local guide always have excellent recommendations.

I normally travel independently — will I enjoy a group tour?

Our small group tours are private departures just for Two’s a Crowd solo travellers. You won’t be joining up with a larger group of people for your tour. There’ll be on average, no more than 15 people and they’ll all be solo travellers – no couples, kids or families. For your peace of mind, our tours are also accompanied by a Two’s a Crowd Tour Host.  Two’s a Crowd also operate exclusive cruise and canal barge charters. In this case group sizes are larger, but the ship or barge is exclusive to our solo clients and everyone has their own cabin. In fact, we were the first (and to date only) company in the world to operate a solos only river cruise.

Fantastic first solo trip

I had a fantastic trip. Absolutely loved Canada and Alaska. It's the first time I have travelled solo and was pleasantly surprised to find a bunch of people that all got on so well. Diane our host was great. She did a good job of getting us altogether for meals, excursions, shopping trips etc. I liked that she quietly got things done without being loud or "in-your-face". She was good at being one of us as well as our leader. Wendy, Canada/Alaska

Good balance of activities and spare time

Had a great time. Good mixture of organised activities and spare time. Diane was an excellent tour host. Russell the tour guide was great, very knowledgeable and personable with his insights into growing up and living in Canada. Sharon, Canada/Alaska

Well organised trip with an excellent host

The trip was well organised, with a good mix of activity and free time. The scenery was spectacular and fellow travellers were a great bunch. Diane is a excellent host - helpful, courteous and above all a pleasure to know. I found her bubbly personality a bonus and can only speak highly of her. Gary, Canada/Alaska

Great holiday

What a great trip! I experienced so much and participated in all that was offered. I had read and reviewed as much as time allowed me but was not prepared for what the trip gave me and that is a better understanding of the beautiful people of both countries. - Lesley on Vietnam/Cambodia

In good company

I thought the suggestions for optional things to do, in the "free" time were very good. So good, we really ended up with very little free time. So much to do! - Mary on Vietnam
