Two’s a Crowd has partnered with WA tour operator Annette Porter and Southern Forest Experiences’ Peter Casonato to bring you a world class food and wine tour of the southern forests region of Western Australia this August.
This tour is a back-stage pass to this amazing region of WA and includes meeting local winemakers and farmers and experiencing their produce in very unique ways. You will also have exclusive access to areas not normally open to the public, allowing a better understanding of the region that is fast becoming known as the food bowl of Western Australia. One of the many highlights will be a full day devoted to truffles, where you dig your own and feast on these tasty and rare morsels at a private dinner.

DAY 1 Saturday 13th August 2022
BUSSELTON (L/D)
You will be met at the airport by Mick from Bus About Margaret River and Pete from Southern Forest Experiences. With your luggage packed away you will be taken directly to the Busselton foreshore for a fish n chip lunch and an experience at the multi award winning, Busselton Jetty. Take the train out to the end of the jetty for a guided tour of the Underwater Observatory (one of only 6 in the world) Later, check in to your room and have a quick break before heading off for a leisurely coastal drive around Geographe Bay and finding the perfect spot to witness a spectacular WA sunset over the water. Dinner tonight at the iconic Caves House in Yallingup includes a tour to learn a little of the history of this beautiful building, opened in 1903.

DAY 2 Sunday 14th August
MARGARET RIVER (B/L/D)
Breakfast at the hotel before a full day exploring the many treasures of the Margaret River Region. Drive the scenic route through Dunsborough and down Caves Road, home to some of the finest wineries and restaurants in WA. Your day will include winery visits, tastings, a wander around the Margaret River mouth (home of the Margaret River Pro on the Worlds Surf league) a 3-course lunch at a beautiful winery in the heart of Margaret River and a few other surprises. Dinner tonight back at the hotel.

DAY 3 Monday 15th August
NANNUP – KARRI VALLEY (B/L/D)
This morning after breakfast you will leave the Margaret River region and enter the spectacular Southern Forests and Valleys region. Visit Nannup, a perfectly preserved historic timber town from the early 1900’s, situated on the banks of the Blackwood River. A perfect location to access many walking/riding trails through the forests. Take some time here to amble through this quirky town and walk along the old railway bridge to see the Flood Tree and the incredible heights the river has reached in this area over the years. Meet the clockmaker and see his incredible handcrafted wooden clock, built of local timber, and considered to be the world’s largest wooden pendulum clock. A beautiful location for our gourmet platter lunch today and a wine tasting, the stunning Ampersand Estates (formerly Donnelly River Wines). A very special cocktail will be included that uses the local flavours superbly. Ampersand Estates is also home to Australia’s only single harvest distillery, Rainfall Distillery, specialising in vodka and gin distilled in a single region and year using local ingredients found in the region. So of course a gin and vodka tasting is a must. Enjoy some time at Karri Valley Resort, situated on the edge of Lake Beedelup and surrounded by the stunning Karri Forest, before meeting for drinks and dinner at the Lakeside Restaurant.

PEMBERTON – MANJIMUP (B/L/D)
A cooked breakfast this morning at the resort and then a visit to Beedelup Falls. (You can say you walked some of the famous Bibbulmun Track). A walk across the suspension bridge for the brave is worth the effort here. A day of tall trees, and spectacular forests and an opportunity to climb the Gloucester Tree, the world’s second tallest fire-lookout tree. We then visit Southern Forests chocolates where you can reward yourself for making the climb or simply watching others making the climb! Next a visit to the town of Pemberton set in the heart of Karri tree country. Lunch here today by a local chef featuring local produce. After lunch it’s off to Manjimup with a winery visit along the way and then a very special visit to the old timber town of Jardee. Hear the stories from someone who lived here as a boy in its heyday (your guide, Peter Casonato). Dinner tonight at a local restaurant in Manjimup where you learn about your exclusive upcoming Agrifood experience covering the next few days.

DAY 5 Wednesday 17th August
SOUTHERN FORESTS (B/L/D)
After a café breakfast, we commence our agricultural exploration of the Southern Forests area with a tour of our local marron and trout farm. We then visit a local orchard, the largest in WA, and learn of the developing varieties that are constantly changing for consumer demands. We then move on to a private lunch with Chef Deb at “Sooma” Restaurant. Deb, one of WA’s most unique chefs, will indulge you in a feast of Marron & Trout displaying her creative flair. Following lunch, we take a tour of 3 Ryan’s egg farm. The Ryan’s are one of the traditional farmers of the area cultivating a range of our staple vegetables and do incredible work to improve farming methods to produce outstanding quality products while ensuring limited impact on the environment. This evening we are off to Peos Estate where we will meet Vic and Bente who will be our hosts for the evening. A chat and tasting with Vic Peos before indulging in a cultural feast in a unique facility overlooking the vineyard with a glass of complimentary wine in hand.

SOUTHERN FORESTS (B/L/D)
We start the morning with a café breakfast before commencing our day. This morning we visit the locals that sort and pack our produce ready for delivery to retailers. We then move on to lunch with Chef Raj at Cilantros restaurant where he will display his Indian heritage using all-local produce. The afternoon will see us call in to other local producers where you will meet and talk with some more of the characters that farm the region. Hear their stories, feel their passion, and learn about their produce. Our next port of call is Tall Timbers Restaurant, where you have an opportunity to experience over twenty wines which are all produced in the Southern Forests area. A tapas dinner tonight showcasing the local produce.

DAY 7 Friday 19th August
TRUFFLE HUNTING (B/L/D)
After our café breakfast we will meander into Manjimup to discover the Manjimup Heritage Park, which provides a unique experience that combines both museums and recreational activities in the same place. Guided entry to all three museums is included in your tour of the Heritage Park precinct. Lunch here today at the Park Café. We go on a truffle hunting adventure and discover the alluring story Australian black truffles (tuber melanosporum or Périgord truffle) and how they came to be sought after by the world’s best chefs. The Booth family take us for a wander amongst the hazelnut and oak trees in their orchard and engage the services of Truffle dogs Molly, Gidgee, and Max, who will lead us through the trees as they nose out the ripest of black truffles. Experience the excitement of digging up a truffle yourself: the heady aroma of truffle the moment it is unearthed is unforgettable. On our return travels we will call in to a local Trufferie and Winery and enjoy an exclusive truffle product and wine pairing private event to prepare your tastebuds for the evening decadence ahead, and possibly pick up some wine to enjoy with your evening meal. Dinner will be a delight for your senses where you will be treated to a private six course Truffle exclusive dining experience with Chef Joe Ditri.
After coming from Northcliffe, Joe moved to Perth and was a chef at “Fraser’s Restaurant” in Kings Park for 16 years. During this time Joe was awarded 2 gold medals at the “Restaurant of Champions” and in 2006 was awarded the “Western Australian Young Chef of the Year”. After then spending 3 years as head chef at Brika’s Restaurant in Perth, Joe decided to move back to Manjimup to be closer to family and the fresh produce and food of the area which inspired his original journey.

Margaret River
The Margaret River Wine Region and is known for its wine production and tourism, attracting an estimated 500,000 visitors annually. In earlier days the area was better known for hardwood timber and agricultural production.
The town is named after the river, which is presumed to be named after Margaret Whicher, cousin of John Garrett Bussell (founder of Busselton) in 1831. The name is first shown on a map of the region published in 1839. Before British settlement the area was inhabited by the Noongar people. The first British settlers arrived as early as 1850, with timber logging commencing in around 1870. By 1910, the town had a hotel which also operated as a post office.
After World War I, an attempt by the Government of Western Australia to attract migrants to Western Australia (known as the Group Settlement Scheme) and establish farms in the region attracted new settlers to the town. In 1922 over 100 settlers moved into the district.
