A representative from Baunti Escapes will be there to welcome us to the island and see us to our accommodation at the Governors Lodge Resort Hotel. DAY 3 Monday 21st March 2022

DISCOVER NORFOLK ISLAND (B/D)

We wake to the peaceful sound of birds, a terrific way to start the day. Today we are collected by Baunti Escapes for the Discover Our World tour. We will be introduced to the island to set the scene for our stay. Our tour includes a visit to the convict buildings in historic Kingston and St Barnabas Chapel, built from the ruins of the New Gaol. Later today we visit Cyclorama, where we can walk inside a continuous 360 degree panoramic painting! It will feel as though we are standing on a pier or ship’s deck and part of the scenes. A spectacular 3D effect is achieved with realistic perspective and detailed artwork stretching all the way to the visitor’s feet. Storyboards, lists and maps explain the history in an easy-to-understand way.

DAY 4 Tuesday 22nd March 2022

FAMOUS NORFOLK RESIDENTS (B/D)

We’ll hear one of Norfolk Island’s more famous residents was Colleen McCullough and today we have exclusive access into her private world. The well-known author of 24 books called Norfolk Island home for almost 36 years and she and husband, Norfolk Islander, Ric Robinson, created a luxurious hideaway together. They maintained their privacy religiously to ensure that Colleen had the perfect environment for her writing. Some of her most powerful titles were created in this much-loved sanctuary. Her beloved property “Out Yenna” is now open and we will be escorted through her magnificent home where we will view Ric and Colleen’s priceless collection of artefacts gathered on their travels all over the world. We will see where her books were researched and where she worked into the wee hours creating the incredible tales that have sold in their millions in so many different languages. For lunch today (at own expense), we visit a clean, green and sustainable dairy goat farm. We meet Emily from The Hilli Goat – the Norfolk Way tour where we’ll watch the milking of the goats, walk the edible garden and see the cheese making, finishing with a delicious array of tastings.

DAY 5 Wednesday 23rd March 2022

NORFOLK TODAY & AT NIGHT (B/D)

After breakfast we join the Norfolk Today Tour. We’ll learn how Norfolk Islanders live in the 21st century and make life on this tiny South Pacific Island possible. How is petrol and gas brought to the island? How is the island powered? This is a behind the scenes tour where we’ll meet the locals and see how Norfolk plays a role in the worldwide weather monitoring as well as visiting the community radio station. Next we join the Convict Kingston Tour and learn about world heritage listed Kingston. We’ll hear about the first settlers, the Polynesians who came 900 years ago and learn the facts and legends associated with the first and second convict settlements. Following dinner at the resort we travel into the bushland of Norfolk Island. It is here that we are treated to a Wonderland By Night! The setting is 10 acres of magical Norfolk pines and bushland lit up like an enchanted forest. We’ll meander along (or ride in the ‘Moon Buggy’) a winding pathway with our guide reciting poems and lighting up dioramas throughout the bush. Afterwards we enjoy a light supper.

DAY 6 Thursday 24th March 2022

BREAKFAST BUSH WALK (B/L/D)

We have a different breakfast setting this morning as we are taken on a gentle-paced walk through a diverse habitat from rainforest to the Captain Cook Memorial. As we ramble along the track our guide will identify local grasses, ferns, shrubs as well as bird species. Our efforts will be rewarded with a delicious barbeque breakfast with all the trimmings. The remainder of our morning is strolling Burnt Pine at leisure, taking in the shops. This afternoon we embark on the Farm & Industry Tour. Tourism to the island might be Norfolk’s largest industry but it is by no means its only one. On this tour, we take you to a selection of the many other enterprises that sustain our community. These might include: raising meat producing sheep, market gardening, pig farming, manufacturing soft drinks and liqueurs, gardening or exporting Kentia seedlings. Our tour will also include afternoon tea. At nightfall, we participate in a fixture of Norfolk Island that is the legendary Progressive Dinner. This is the perfect way to get a taste of the real Norfolk lifestyle. Our first stop is at the northern tip of the island to enjoy pre-dinner nibbles at a clifftop home with amazing ocean views. The evening finishes with main course and dessert at a large family home on the southern side of the island. Our host will also entertain us with some of his island experiences and share some of the historical practices and industries.

DAY 7 Friday 25th March 2022

BOOKS & HISTORY (B/D)

This morning Baunti Tours will collect us for the Gardeners Delight Tour. We are taken on a journey behind the scenes to experience a market garden complete with a flower garden and an orchard. A secluded old Island home surrounded by the most amazing gardens; these gardens are irrigated by a hand dug well which was dug in the convict era. At a time to be advised (dependant on tidal activity) we are collected by Baunti Escapes for our unique Glass Bottomed Boat tour. Our two Norfolk Islanders, Donald & John, will share their knowledge of Norfolk’s marine life. Once we’ve “walked the plank” with these ‘mutineer descendants’ it takes a minute to get to the Reef. View beautiful coral gardens and tropical fish inside the calm crystal waters of Norfolk’s lagoon.

DAY 8 Saturday 26th March 2022

BREAKFAST AMONGST THE PINES (B/D)

This morning is free to relax and enjoy the resort facilities as well as taking some free time for shopping. Our immersion into local life continues with our visit to the Pitcairn Settlers Village. We’ll experience what life was like for Norfolk Island’s most recent settlers, the Pitcairners and their descendants at one of the last few remaining original settler’s properties. Light refreshments are included during our visit.Late afternoon, we are off to the western side of the island for the wonderful Island Fish Feast. Perched on the clifftop above Anson Bay we will have an eagle-eyed view of the tiny crescent shaped beach and the magnificent spread of ocean stretching to the far horizon. We’ll enjoy paddock to plate freshness including local fish, prepared the local way! We’ll be entertained by a performer as well as Tahitian-style dancers.

DAY 9 Sunday 27th March 2022

NORFOLK ISLAND TO SYDNEY (B)

Having had a wonderful holiday, we now prepare for our return home. Following breakfast, we store our luggage and have the chance to enjoy a wander through the Sunday Markets with plenty of time to snap up a bargain or two, or the opportunity to enjoy a morning Church Service. Following some free time for lunch, we make our way to the airport for our afternoon flight. After clearing customs and immigration in Sydney, it’s time to say our farewells, with fond memories of being a Norfolk Island local for a short while. Those heading interstate from Sydney will need to transfer to the domestic terminal for your onward flight home.

Norfolk Island

Norfolk Island is an external territory of Australia located in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and New Caledonia, 1,412 kilometres (877 mi) directly east of Australia’s Evans Head and about 900 kilometres (560 mi) from Lord Howe Island. Together with the neighbouring Phillip Island and Nepean Island, the three islands collectively form the Territory of Norfolk Island.[9] At the 2016 census, it had 1748 inhabitants living on a total area of about 35 km2 (14 sq mi). Its capital is Kingston.
Norfolk Island is the main island in a group comprising the Australian external territory of Norfolk Island, situated in the Pacific Ocean between Australia and New Zealand approximately 692 km (430 mi) south of New Caledonia.

The first known settlers in Norfolk Island were East Polynesians but they had already departed when Great Britain settled it as part of its 1788 settlement of Australia. The island served as a convict penal settlement from 6 March 1788 until 5 May 1855, except for an 11-year hiatus between 15 February 1814 and 6 June 1825, when it lay abandoned. On 8 June 1856, permanent civilian residence on the island began when descendents of the Bounty mutineers were relocated from Pitcairn Island. In 1914 the UK handed Norfolk Island over to Australia to administer as an external territory.

Native to the island, the evergreen Norfolk Island pine is a symbol of the island and is pictured on its flag. The pine is a key export for Norfolk Island, being a popular ornamental tree in Australia (where two related species grow), and also worldwide.
