We kick off our fabulous two weeks with a guided tour of the wonderful city of Vienna. Dripping in history and bursting with artistic and musical masterpieces, the eclectic feast of architectural styles on offer will take your breath away. There is much to see in this spellbinding city: its Imperial palaces, the Museums Quarter (displaying works by Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt), the impressive buildings along the Ringstrasse, St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the famous Vienna State Opera, amongst many others. Our day starts with a city tour and in the afternoon we’ll make our way to Schönbrunn Palace, the sumptuous summer palace and gardens of Empress Maria Theresia and the Habsburg empire. We’ll cap off our Vienna experience by taking in the ‘Sound of Vienna’, where we’ll enjoy the ‘Alt Wien’ orchestra playing popular pieces from Vienna’s classical era. Our ship remains in Vienna.

Our guided excursion through the city will include a visit to the home of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, the old city walls, the summer residence of the archbishop and the current residence of the president of Slovakia. In the restored old town we’ll see Michael’s Gate, the Primatial Palace and St. Martin’s Cathedral, a former coronation cathedral for Hungarian kings.

Day 4 - Mohacs, Hungary

This morning we visit the tiny harbor town of Mohács, a melting pot of nations and famous for the annual Busójárás festival (late February or March), where locals parade through town adorned with horned wooden masks (busós) to scare off winter and welcome spring. Two important battles took place in the fields around this town, which had a huge impact on European history. The battle in 1526 was lost and was the beginning of the reign of the Ottoman Empire for the next century and a half. In 1687 the Austrian troops and Habsburg allies overturned the empire and regained the cities of the Danube

On day 9 we spend the day on board and experience what is probably the most scenic part of our cruise. Enjoy the breathtakingly beautiful view of the surrounding Carpathian Mountains and the Balkan mountain range. A particular highlight is the trip through the ‘Iron Gates’. Consisting of four narrow gorges and three wide basins spread over several miles of the Danube between Romania and Serbia, the Iron Gates are thought to be one of Europe’s most dramatic natural wonders, featuring a spectacular narrow gorge (only 200 meters width and 80 meters depth) with enormous white limestone cliffs. Don’t miss the view of the imposing stone likeness of King Decebalus of Dacia at Dubova, which, at 40 meters high, is one of the largest rock sculptures in Europe.

Travel along St George’s Canal, also known as the ‘end of the Danube’ – the so-called ‘kilometre zero’ – where the mighty river flows into the Black Sea. Your destination is the nearby fishing village of St. George. Our boat safari will give you an even closer view of the impressive natural landscape and its fascinating flora and fauna. Expect to see red-breasted geese, egrets, herons and white-tailed eagles, as well as the superb great white and Dalmatian pelicans. Day 9 - Bucharest - Giurgiu

Today we disembark our ship during a stop at the Danube Port of Chiciu for a full day excursion to the invigorating capital city of Romania, Bucharest. Known as the ‘Paris of the East’, driving along the city’s magnificent boulevards, lined with impressive buildings, you’ll discover the reason for its Gallic flair. A short guided walk through the newly designed pedestrian area of the historic center will take you back 500 years in time. Among the old commercial streets and buildings, we’ll visit the Stravropoleos Romanian Orthodox Church, dating back to 1724 and one of the oldest churches in the city. The tour ends with a photo stop at the impressive Palace of the Parliament. The palace, previously known as the ‘People’s House’, is one of the largest buildings in Europe and was constructed between 1983 and 1989. During the tour you’ll see the Catholic St. Mary’s Church, the Orthodox Church of St. George and the home of Albert Einstein. On our way to picturesque Sremski Karlovci we’ll pass the fortress Peterwardein, which was built by the French architect Vauban and was one of Europe’s largest defense structures in the 18th century. Sremski Karlovci contains a series of cultural and historical monuments and we’ll discover the cathedral during a tour of the Baroque old town, as well as the Patriarch’s Palace and the theological school.

On day 12 we take a historical journey to see just how paprika became the ‘red gold’ of the Kalocsa Region. A visit to the ‘Paprika House’ will give you the opportunity to taste cakes filled and baked with paprika, and a variety of other products. Next we’ll visit the 19th-century home of a local upper-class farmer family. We’ll enjoy a short folk dance performance, and local women, dressed in their embroidered costumes, will demonstrate old crafts, such as embroidery or painting eggs.

Our next trip is to the Hungarian Puszta for a chance to escape city life. The Puszta (Great Plains) are Europe’s most expansive grasslands and a colorful habitat for various plants and animals communities. Enjoy the hospitality of the hostesses and riders wearing traditional costumes, quench your thirst with cool red or white wine or apple juice, taste the breakfast of Hungarian peasants and admire the galloping of the beautiful Hungarian half-blood horses. Day 13 - Budapest

Today we arrive in Hungary’s magnificent capital, Budapest for the perfect finale to our trip. One of the largest cities in the European Union, this fascinating city embodies the contrast between the twin cities of Buda and Pest, which were separated one from the other along each bank of the Danube before being reunited in 1872. Buda, the higher of the two cities, with its winding cobble-stoned streets and baroque palaces, Turkish baths and Royal castles, and, Pest, the ‘fiery’, which offers its visitors a marvellous display of different architectural styles. Our morning city tour takes in the largest building in Hungary: the neo-Gothic Parliament building, Fisherman’s Bastion, Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge, which connects the two sides of the city. In the afternoon we head to Gödöllö Castle; the world’s second largest Baroque castle and the former summer residence of Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) of Austria and Queen of Hungary. Nestled in an enormous park, this is the largest and most attractive complex of Baroque buildings in Hungary. In recent years it has been lovingly refurbished and you can visit the splendid ballroom with its beautiful, marble stucco details, as well as the apartments of the royal couple. Onboard this evening, we’ll enjoy a Hungarian folklore show on board as we cruise the Danube to see the beautiful city by night.
