European river cruising has grown almost exponentially in the last 10 years. There are literally dozens of operators and hundreds of cruise ships plying every kilometre of Europe’s waterways such as the Rhine, Danube and Rhone. Ships from say APT & Scenic typically hold around 160 passengers and cabins range from “lead in” with a couple of small windows right up to twin walk out balconies. In fact speaking of balconies, there has been somewhat of a marketing war in the past few years with cruise operators trumpeting who has the better balcony. French balconies are so passe. You just have to be able to walk out there. What I wonder is given that most of the cruising is done at night and on-shore touring done during the day, how much time would you spend sitting on that balcony anyway?

But what if you want something smaller and with a slower pace? Where you can really see and feel France with a smaller group on a smaller ship? Then canal barge cruising could be just what you are looking for?

Vive le difference

Canal barges are much smaller – typically 12 cabins accommodating up to 24 passengers. Generally with private facilities and a crew of 5 or 6. As with the big ships, all meals are provided and you can have wine or beer with lunch or dinner. Often the barges will carry bikes too so you can ride along the canal and meet the barge at its next stop.

A great example of canal barges is the MS Jeanine operated by the French owned CroisiEurope. The recently renovated and upgraded Jeanine operates a number of 7 day cruises through some of the most beautiful countryside in France. The best thing for solos is that CroisiEurope is very solo friendly and offers low single supplements of around 30-35%. Nowhere year double the twin share rate you would expect to pay with the bigger river cruise companies.

There are two MS Jeanine itineraries available in 2013 with multiple departures. All have the low single supplement available. Imagine gently cruising through Alsace, stopping to explore chateaux and amazing villages full of history. You even have the opportunity to dine off the barge too. Plus you have a very authentic on-board experience with French crew, French food and French wines. Magnifique!

Click here to have a look at the itinerary options and pricing. If you want to know more or check availability just contact us. It’s a unique way to see France.

Thanks for reading.
